Arsenal agree a €20m fee to sell Leandro Trossard to Beşiktaş

Arsenal are close to losing one of their most dependable attacking options, with Besiktas agreeing a fee worth around 20m euros (£17.1m) to sign Leandro Trossard. The Turkish club will pay 18m euros up front and a further 2m euros in add-ons, and while personal terms are still being tied up, both clubs expect the move to go through.

There is a reason it has not been rubber-stamped yet. Trossard is away with Belgium at the World Cup, where his side face the United States in the last 16, and any announcement is likely to wait until his tournament is over. For now this is an agreement in principle rather than a completed transfer, but the framework is in place.

Why Arsenal are willing to sell

The thinking is simple enough. Trossard is in the final year of his contract, which runs to June 2027, and a player in that position is worth more sold now than lost for nothing next summer. At 31, he was never going to be central to where Arsenal are heading, and 20m euros for a squad forward with 12 months left on his deal counts as sensible business.

It also clears wages and a spot in a busy forward line. Arsenal have spent this window reshaping their attack, and moving Trossard on is part of making room for the players they want to build around next.

A useful servant heads for the exit

Trossard arrived from Brighton in January 2023 and quickly became the kind of player every squad needs. He was comfortable anywhere across the front three and reliable whether he started or came off the bench, and he scored his share of goals that mattered. Managers value that sort of versatility even when it does not always translate into a guaranteed shirt, and for long stretches he was exactly that: the option you were glad to have.

A switch to Besiktas offers him what Arsenal could not always promise, which is regular football and a leading role. The Istanbul club, pushing to get back to the top of the Turkish game, have made him a genuine priority and are ready to hand him a salary worth up to 9m euros a season.

For Arsenal this is one more moving part in a hectic summer. For Trossard, at 31 and with his contract winding down, it looks like a smart time to go somewhere he will play every week. The paperwork has to wait until Belgium are finished in North America, but the direction of travel is not in much doubt.
