Barcelona accelerate Bastoni talks as Champions League exit forces summer rethink

Barcelona have intensified talks with Inter Milan over a summer move for centre-back Alessandro Bastoni, according to multiple reports in Spain and Italy, as the club recalibrates its transfer plans following a Champions League quarter-final exit to Atletico Madrid.
Atletico elimination sharpens Barcelona's focus
The elimination by Atletico, who won 3-2 on aggregate after taking the first leg 2-0 at Camp Nou before holding on through a 2-1 second-leg defeat in Madrid, exposed defensive vulnerabilities that the club's hierarchy is now determined to address. Bastoni, 27, has been on Barcelona's radar for months, but the urgency of the pursuit has increased. The Italian international is seen as the profile of centre-back the squad lacks: comfortable on the ball, strong in the air, and experienced in knockout football at the highest level.
Inter hold firm on 70 million euro valuation
Negotiations are complicated by Inter's stance. The Nerazzurri will not accept less than 70 million euros for Bastoni, a figure that stretches Barcelona's budget, particularly given the financial restrictions the club continues to operate under. Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has publicly stated that he does not want to lose the defender, though reports in Italy suggest the club has already begun scouting replacements, including Sassuolo centre-back Tarik Muharemovic.
Barcelona want the deal wrapped up before June, sources close to the negotiations say, to avoid a prolonged saga that could see other clubs enter the picture. Other top European clubs have been linked with Bastoni, though Barcelona believe they are in pole position.
Bastoni's position remains unclear
The player himself has sent mixed signals. Earlier this month, reports from Milan suggested Bastoni was not actively pushing for a move and remained happy at Inter, where he has been a first-choice starter since 2020. More recent reporting from Spain, however, indicates that Barcelona's sporting director Deco has held direct conversations with Bastoni's representatives and that the player is open to the idea of a move to Camp Nou if the financial package is right.
Barcelona are also reportedly exploring cheaper alternatives in case the Bastoni deal falls through, with Bologna's Jhon Lucumi valued at around 25 million euros emerging as the leading backup option. But for now, Bastoni remains the top priority as Barcelona try to rebuild a defence that conceded too easily when it mattered most this season.
