Mbappe leads Messi by an assist as the World Cup Golden Boot race reaches the semis

The World Cup has reached the point where the Golden Boot stops being a list and starts being a story. Four names have carried the scoring charts through the knockout rounds, and with the semi-finals set, three of them are still playing. The fourth, awkwardly for him, is not.

At the top, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi are locked together on eight goals each. Mbappe got there in the quarter-final win over Morocco, his eighth of the tournament, and it nudged him back in front of Messi on the only tiebreaker that counts here. Both have eight goals, but Mbappe has three assists to Messi’s one, and that two-assist advantage is currently the difference between owning the Golden Boot and chasing it.

Haaland’s total is stuck

Erling Haaland finished the tournament on seven, one behind the leaders, after a brace against Brazil that briefly made him look like the man to beat. The problem is that Norway are out, beaten by England in the quarter-finals, so his tally is frozen exactly where it is. He can only watch now as the players above and behind him keep adding to theirs. Seven goals may still be enough to sneak onto the podium, but it will not win the award if any of the three semi-finalists gets going.

Harry Kane sits on six, having scored against Mexico in the last 16, and he is the one with the most ground to make up. In his favour, England are still in it, which means he has at least one more match and possibly two to close the gap. Against him, he is in the same half of the draw as one of his rivals, and that produces the quirk that shapes this whole race.

The semi-final that settles the argument

Messi and Kane are on opposite sides of the same semi-final. England play Argentina, so one of the two leaves the tournament next, and with him goes any chance of adding to his total. Only one of them reaches the final. That is a small but real advantage for Mbappe, who is in the other semi against Spain and cannot be knocked out by a fellow contender at this stage. He simply has to keep scoring.

None of this decides anything on its own. A hat-trick from a player nobody has mentioned here would rewrite the order in ninety minutes, and knockout football rarely follows the seedings. But the shape of it is clear enough. Mbappe holds the lead and the cleaner path, Messi can retake top spot if he outlasts England, and Kane needs both goals and results to break in. Haaland, having done his part, can only hope seven proves stubborn.
