Sooryavanshi’s 18-ball fifty powers India past Zimbabwe in the first T20I
A blistering 18-ball fifty from 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set up a seven-wicket win in Harare, handing India a 1-0 lead in the T20I series and Shreyas Iyer his first win as captain.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made the first T20I his own, blasting a fifty off just 18 balls as India cruised past Zimbabwe by seven wickets at the Harare Sports Club on Thursday. The 15-year-old opener needed only the powerplay to settle the contest, and India go 1-0 up in the three-match series.
Chasing 126, India were never troubled. Sooryavanshi came out swinging from the first over and reached his half-century inside the powerplay, hammering four fours and four sixes at a strike rate north of 260. He fell for exactly 50, caught in the deep off Richard Ngarava, but by then the target had been gutted. India knocked off the runs in 13.2 overs.
A record for the teenager
The knock made Sooryavanshi the youngest player to make a fifty in a men’s T20 international, another line on a CV that already reads like fiction. This was the same ground where he struck 175 off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final against England in February, carrying India to the title, and he returned to it after a difficult senior debut series in England. On Thursday there were no nerves, just clean, brutal hitting through the line.
Ishan Kishan kept the tempo up after Sooryavanshi departed, racing to 35 and taking any lingering doubt out of the chase. India got home with plenty in hand, the kind of finish that flatters a bowling side that had actually done little wrong.
India’s bowlers set it up
The platform for the win was laid with the ball. India put Zimbabwe in after winning the toss and squeezed the hosts throughout, restricting them to 125 for 7 from their 20 overs. Prince Yadav was the pick with 2 for 19, and Mayank Yadav struck twice up top to remove the early threats. Ravi Bishnoi chipped in through the middle as India’s attack refused to let the innings breathe.
Zimbabwe never gathered momentum. Wessly Madhevere top-scored with 39 and put on a 58-run stand for the sixth wicket with Tadiwanashe Marumani, who made a brisk 27, but wickets at regular intervals meant the hosts could not push past a total that was always going to be light. Madhevere was run out in the final over, and Ryan Burl’s 26 was the only other score of note.
A first for the captain
The result also handed Shreyas Iyer his maiden win as India’s T20I captain. Leading a young, experimental side missing several first-choice names, Iyer will take plenty from a night that was controlled with the ball and ruthless with the bat.
India’s selectors have used this Zimbabwe tour to look at the next wave, and the opening night could hardly have gone better. Sooryavanshi grabbed the headlines, while Mayank Yadav collected the player-of-the-match award for his early breakthroughs, but the shape of the win, disciplined bowling followed by a fearless chase, is exactly what a rebuilding T20 side wants to see.
The second T20I is next up at the same venue, with India able to keep experimenting from a position of strength.
