Rain washes out the second ODI as Sri Lanka stay ahead of West Indies

There was nothing for the players to do at Sabina Park on Saturday but watch the rain. The second one-day international between West Indies and Sri Lanka was washed out without a ball bowled, a result that suits the visitors far more than the hosts. Sri Lanka stay 1-0 up in the three-match series and cannot now lose it.

A toss and not much else

West Indies won the toss and chose to bowl, which was as far as the contest got. Persistent rain over Kingston never let up, and the umpires called the day-night match off at around half past six in the evening with no prospect of play. For a ground that has seen plenty of weather interruptions over the years, this was a complete loss rather than a shortened game.

The washout is the worst outcome for West Indies. A win was the only way back into the series for them after the opener, and instead they leave Sabina Park no better off, the point shared doing nothing to change the standings.

Sri Lanka sitting pretty

Sri Lanka had set the tone on Wednesday, taking the first ODI by 41 runs on the back of a disciplined batting effort and a tidy bowling display. That lead now looks a lot more comfortable. With the second match gone, the most West Indies can manage is to level the series in the final game, while Sri Lanka know a draw is the floor and a win would seal it outright.

It is a frustrating way for a tight series to lose its middle act, and the home crowd were the ones who went away with the least to show for the evening. The pattern of stop-start cricket in the Caribbean at this time of year is familiar, but it rarely feels less satisfying than when an entire match disappears to the weather.

All to play for on Monday

Everything now points to the decider. West Indies, under pressure and out of room, have to win on Monday to share the spoils, while Sri Lanka can finish the job with a performance like the one they produced in the opener. A washed-out Saturday means the series rests on a single match, which is at least a clean way to settle it.
