Mumbai Indians host table-topping Punjab Kings at Wankhede with Rohit fitness a major worry

Mumbai Indians welcome Shreyas Iyer's in-form Punjab Kings to the Wankhede on Thursday night, with Rohit Sharma's hamstring injury leaving MI's top order looking even thinner than before.

Mumbai Indians have one win from four and a key opener who may not be fit. Punjab Kings have three wins from four and a chase machine for a skipper. On paper, this one already looks awkward for the hosts.

The 24th match of IPL 2026 gets under way at the Wankhede on April 16, with Mumbai ninth on the table and Punjab third. Shreyas Iyer's Punjab side have looked the steadier of the two units so far this season, with a settled top order and a bowling attack that has closed out tight games.

Rohit the big question

The biggest pre-match story is Rohit Sharma's fitness. He picked up a hamstring problem during Mumbai's 18-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on April 12, retired hurt in the sixth over of the chase, and has since skipped a net session. The franchise is waiting on scan results, and with the recovery window now down to a few days, he looks unlikely to take his place at the top of the order against Punjab.

If Rohit misses out, Mumbai will need either Tilak Varma or Ryan Rickelton to take some of the powerplay load. That is a lot to ask of a batting group that has not clicked yet this season.

Mumbai's bowling problem

The numbers from MI's first four matches make uncomfortable reading. Only three wickets in the first six overs across four games is the kind of powerplay return that leaves your death bowlers defending 200-plus every time out. Jasprit Bumrah, usually the man Mumbai turn to early, has gone wicketless through four matches. Trent Boult and Hardik Pandya have not taken up the slack.

Against Punjab's top order, that margin for error disappears. Priyansh Arya and Iyer himself have been busy in the powerplay, and PBKS have already knocked off imposing totals in this tournament without looking stretched.

Wankhede conditions

The Wankhede remains one of the best batting wickets on the circuit, with the ball coming on nicely under lights and short square boundaries waiting for anyone in. Mumbai's heat wave warning for this week means it will be hot and sticky even at toss time, and the dew factor later in the evening usually favours whoever bats second.

Punjab have handled chases well this season. If the coin lands their way, expect them to bowl first. The head-to-head between these sides is level at 17 wins each across 34 meetings, which sounds even until you remember that Punjab are the form side and Mumbai are hosting without their senior opener.

Mumbai need this. A fourth defeat in five could push them out of sight in a tight table. Punjab sense a chance to keep pace at the top. It is the sort of mismatch on paper that only the Wankhede crowd can fix.
