Manchester Super Giants edge London Spirit by seven runs despite Livingstone’s 69

Manchester Super Giants held their nerve at Lord’s on Thursday night, defending 138 to beat London Spirit by seven runs in The Hundred. Tim Seifert’s 67 gave the visitors something to bowl at, and a disciplined effort in the field kept Liam Livingstone’s late charge just short as the hosts finished on 131 for 6.

Seifert gives Super Giants a total

Batting first, Manchester Super Giants leaned almost entirely on Seifert. Opening the innings, the New Zealander made 67 from 45 balls, sharing brief stands with Jos Buttler and Heinrich Klaasen before the rest of the order fell away around him. No other batter reached double figures. Adam Zampa was the pick of London Spirit’s attack with two for 27, and Livingstone weighed in with two for 14, so Super Giants scratched their way to 138 for 9 from their 100 balls. On a decent surface, it looked a fraction under par.

Livingstone’s lone hand

London Spirit’s reply turned into a one-man show. Livingstone, who had already done his bit with the ball, walked in and batted with a freedom none of his team-mates could find, racing to 69 off 40 balls. For a spell he looked like winning it on his own. But Manchester Super Giants kept striking at the other end, and it was Sonny Baker who settled it at the death, bowling Livingstone to break the chase and then having James Coles caught off the final ball to finish with two for 29. London Spirit closed on 131 for 6, seven runs short.

A tight one at Lord’s

It was the sort of low-scoring scrap the shortest format throws up, settled by a handful of composed deliveries rather than one big moment. Manchester Super Giants take the win and the momentum; London Spirit will be left wondering how they lost a match Livingstone did so much, with bat and ball, to win.
