India eye a series-sealing win over Zimbabwe in the second T20I

India lead the three-match series 1-0 and can put it beyond Zimbabwe with a win in the second T20I at Harare Sports Club on Saturday, two days after Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s record fifty lit up the opener. The game starts at 4:30 PM IST.

Shreyas Iyer’s young side arrived in Harare under a little pressure after a run of T20I defeats, and the first match answered most of the questions in a hurry. Zimbabwe managed 125 for 7, India knocked off the runs in 13.2 overs, and the seven-wicket margin flattered the hosts if anything. Win again on Saturday and India take an unbeatable 2-0 lead with a game to spare.

Iyer’s side a win from the series

The headline out of the opener belonged to Sooryavanshi. The 15-year-old opener brought up his maiden international fifty in 18 balls, with four fours and four sixes, to become the youngest player to make a half-century in men’s T20Is. Ishan Kishan chipped in with 35 and Iyer finished unbeaten on 28, but it was Sooryavanshi who turned a straightforward chase into a rout.

Just as important for India was the win itself. The result ended a seven-match winless run in the format and handed Iyer his first victory as T20I captain. This is a heavily rotated squad, missing several of the names on duty in England, with maiden call-ups for wicketkeeper-batter Prabhsimran Singh and pacers Yash Thakur and Ashok Sharma, and Tilak Varma named vice-captain. For a group with that little shared experience, closing out an away series early would count for plenty.

India will not want to change much after that performance. The pace pair of Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav ran through Zimbabwe’s top order in the first game, and India’s batting looks deep enough that Sooryavanshi does not have to fire every night for the total to be chased down. If there is a temptation, it might be to hand one of the uncapped players a game with the series already on the line rather than after it is decided.

Zimbabwe looking for a response

Sikandar Raza’s Zimbabwe were second best in almost every phase of the opener and know it. Their batting never got going, no one built the kind of partnership that sets a defendable total, and 125 was never going to trouble this India top order. At home, with a crowd behind them, they will back themselves to be sharper.

The tools are there. Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava give Raza a new-ball threat capable of making early inroads, Brian Bennett and Wessly Madhevere offer batting that can accelerate, and Raza himself remains one of the more dangerous all-rounders in the shortest format. Zimbabwe also handed a first T20I call-up to 32-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Tafadzwa Tsiga for this series. What they need on Saturday is runs on the board first, because chasing India’s batting off the back of a below-par score is a hard way to level a series.

The Harare pitch usually offers the quicks something early before it eases for batting, which puts a premium on the toss and on surviving the first six overs. Do that, post a total worth defending, and Zimbabwe have a game. Fail to, and India will be celebrating a series win with a match still to play.
