CSK sign Akash Madhwal for 30 lakh as their Ayush Mhatre replacement, and it is the bowler call they needed

Chennai Super Kings have brought in Akash Madhwal as the official replacement for the season-ending Ayush Mhatre, going for a fast bowler at 30 lakh rather than another top-order batter.

Chennai Super Kings have ended the speculation. With Ayush Mhatre out for the rest of IPL 2026 with a torn left hamstring, the franchise has signed Akash Madhwal as his official injury replacement at a fee of 30 lakh, the IPL confirmed on Thursday.

The call was always going to be one of the more revealing decisions of CSK's season. Mhatre, the Under-19 World Cup-winning captain, had been their leading run-scorer at the top of the order before he pulled up batting against Sunrisers Hyderabad. The obvious slot to fill was a top-order batter. Instead Stephen Fleming and the CSK think tank have used the slot on a fast bowler.

A bowling group that needed help

It does not take long to see why. Khaleel Ahmed has been ruled out with a grade two quadriceps tear. Nathan Ellis has been unavailable. MS Dhoni has missed the entire campaign so far with a calf strain, and only now looks close to a return. Three senior names from the squad list are missing in one window, which is a lot for any side, let alone one already trying to dig itself out of the bottom half of the table.

Madhwal at least gives them a different option. The 32-year-old right-armer's 5 for 5 in the 2023 Eliminator at Chepauk against Lucknow Super Giants is still the best bowling figures by an uncapped player in IPL history. He took 14 wickets in eight matches that season for Mumbai Indians. He spent 2024 with MI as well and last season with Rajasthan Royals before going unsold at the IPL 2026 auction.

Where Madhwal can plug in

You can see the logic. With Khaleel and Ellis gone for spells, CSK have leaned on Mukesh Choudhary and Anshul Kamboj alongside the New Zealand quick Matt Henry, with mixed returns. Madhwal's heavy ball and skiddy length, especially with the older ball and at the death, give Ruturaj Gaikwad an extra middle and back-end option without overworking Henry.

Whether he plays straight away is another question. CSK host Gujarat Titans on Sunday at Chepauk, and it would not be a surprise to see Madhwal eased in over the next couple of fixtures rather than thrown straight into the XI on the back of one training session. But for a side whose injury list keeps growing, having a proven IPL operator on the bench is the kind of small win that can keep the season from quietly drifting away.
