How are CPL points awarded?
Two points for a win and none for a defeat. If a match ends without a result, which happens often enough in a Caribbean rainy season, the two points are shared and each side takes one. Teams are then ranked on their points total, highest first.
How many teams qualify for the CPL playoffs?
Four. They play three matches to decide the finalists: Qualifier 1 between the top two, the Eliminator between third and fourth, and then Qualifier 2. The winner of Qualifier 1 is in the final already, so it sits out that middle round.
How do Qualifier 1, the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 fit together?
Qualifier 1 puts first against second, and the winner goes to the final. The Eliminator puts third against fourth, and the loser is out. Qualifier 2 then matches the team beaten in Qualifier 1 against the Eliminator winner, and that produces the second finalist.
What separates two teams level on points?
Net run rate, comparing the rate a side has scored at with the rate it has conceded at over the whole group stage. Across a 10-match league it can swing on one lopsided result, so a heavy defeat late in the season can cost a team a playoff place it looked to have secured.
How many matches does each team play?
Ten in the group stage. The schedule is built around moving the tournament between Caribbean territories, so teams travel a good deal more than they would in a league played inside one country, and the fixture list is not a simple home-and-away split.
When is the CPL played?
In the second half of the year. Recent seasons have begun in August and ended with the final in September, running for roughly six weeks. It sits in a part of the calendar with few competing franchise tournaments, which is one reason it draws a strong overseas contingent.
