Chakaravarthy walks with a crutch and brace as KKR sweat on their must-win at Raipur
Varun Chakaravarthy is a serious doubt for KKR's must-win clash with Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Raipur on Wednesday, after the mystery spinner was filmed walking on a crutch and wearing a protective boot ahead of the match. With KKR's playoff math already on the brink, losing their highest wicket-taker would push a difficult tie into the realm of the unwinnable.
Two matches, one leg, and now a brace
Chakaravarthy first picked up the issue during KKR's win over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, then aggravated it bowling against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley. He was seen limping near the end of his spell in that DC game, walked off cautiously, and turned up to the team's recovery session in a protective boot. By Monday in Raipur the boot had been swapped for a leg brace and a crutch.
Assistant coach Shane Watson confirmed Chakaravarthy is under observation and remains doubtful for the RCB clash. A team source briefed local press that the spinner was at practice in Raipur on Monday but that a final call would not come before the eve of the game, or possibly match day itself. Kolkata have not officially listed a replacement.
What KKR lose if he doesn't play
Chakaravarthy is more than a wicket-taker for KKR; he is the bowler that defines how the rest of the attack is set up. He bowls in the powerplay, in the middle overs and at the death depending on the matchup, and Ajinkya Rahane's plans across the innings revolve around the four overs he is expected to deliver. Without him the lengths in the middle overs become a problem, and either Anukul Roy or Sunil Narine has to absorb a workload neither has been carrying.
RCB's batting plans look very different if Chakaravarthy is missing. Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidar have been the main run-makers through this season, and both are spin-comfortable on flatter Indian decks. Jacob Bethell adds left-handed punch up top, while Tim David and Romario Shepherd cover the back end. A Chakaravarthy-less attack invites RCB to set up around the spin overs rather than play around them.
The math behind why this is a must-win
KKR are 8th with nine points from ten matches and a negative net run rate. Even with four wins in a row to get them here, the table still works against them: the teams immediately above need to slip up multiple times, and KKR cannot afford to drop even one more game. A defeat at Raipur takes a slim playoff window and effectively closes it. A win keeps them alive, while still leaving the heavy lifting to other results elsewhere.
RCB sit second on 14 points with a superior net run rate of plus 1.103, and a win on Wednesday lifts them back to the top of the table over Gujarat Titans. Rajat Patidar's side have been the most consistent batting outfit in the league all season. Raipur, for both teams, is a relatively new venue with limited match history, which makes the toss the second most important moment of the night after Chakaravarthy's warm-up bowl.
Late-window reads to watch
The match-day fitness test is the call to watch. If Chakaravarthy bowls in the warm-up he plays; if he does not, KKR have to choose between bringing in another spinner or going with an extra batter and asking Cameron Green to deliver four overs of seam. Neither option meaningfully replaces what Chakaravarthy gives them. For RCB, the simpler read is to load the top order with intent regardless of who turns up.
