Everton complete permanent signing of Chelsea winger Tyrique George

Everton have turned a loan into a keeper. The club have completed the permanent signing of Tyrique George from Chelsea, a deal worth 18 million pounds up front and one that can rise to around 24 million with add-ons. The 20-year-old winger spent the back half of last season on Merseyside, liked what he found, and has now come back for good.

For Chelsea, it is the sort of sale that was always coming. Their squad has been swollen for a while, and moving on academy players who cannot force their way in is how they keep the books in order.

How the deal is structured

Everton will pay 18 million pounds now, with a further 6 million or so tied to appearances and European qualification. Chelsea have kept a 15 per cent sell-on clause, so they take a slice of any future move. That works out cheaper than the arrangement written into the original loan, which carried an option to buy closer to 25 million. Everton pushed the fee down and still got the player they wanted.

Why Everton went back for him

George is a quick, direct wide player, and Everton already know exactly what they are getting. He was on their books through the second half of the campaign and did enough in his run of games to convince the club he was worth a permanent bid rather than a gamble on someone new. For a side trying to build around younger talent, signing a 20-year-old who has already settled in makes sense.

There is risk in it too. George is still raw, and a player who looked lively on loan now has to deliver over a full season with a bigger price tag on his head. Everton have not always got these calls right. This one, at least, comes with the safety net of a player who has already proved he can handle the step up.

A Chelsea academy product on the move

George came through at Chelsea, which makes the sale a pure profit deal on the balance sheet and helps explain why the club were willing to do business. The sell-on clause means they have not cut ties entirely. If George kicks on at Everton and moves again for a bigger fee, Chelsea will be watching with an interest that goes beyond sentiment.

Keep up with every summer transfer
