AC Milan sign Mario Gila from Lazio, with Real Madrid due a sell-on cut

AC Milan have their new centre-back. The Serie A club confirmed the signing of Mario Gila from Lazio on July 10, an initial €27 million deal that can rise to around €30 million with add-ons and hands the 25-year-old Spaniard a five-year contract at San Siro. It also, quietly, tops up the bank balance of the club that let him go four years ago.

A defender Milan had chased for a while

Gila was not a spur-of-the-moment buy. Milan had circled him across earlier windows before finally getting the deal done this summer, with the medical and paperwork wrapped up before the official announcement. He arrives with just a year left on his Lazio contract, and that timing stripped the Rome club of most of their leverage once the player made clear he wanted out. Lazio pushed back on Milan’s opening approach, but selling now was always more sensible than risking a free exit in 2027.

For Milan, it is the second notable addition of a busy window under Ruben Amorim, following the club-record arrival of striker Goncalo Ramos. Gila gives Amorim a ball-playing centre-back heading into what should be his best years, and slots straight into a defensive rebuild the club sees as central to climbing back up the table.

Real Madrid’s tidy sell-on

The most eye-catching part of the deal is who else profits from it. Real Madrid developed Gila in their academy and sold him to Lazio for around €6 million in 2022, but they were shrewd enough to keep a 50 per cent sell-on clause on any future profit. With Lazio now cashing in for several times what they paid, Madrid are due a slice of the proceeds without kicking a ball, a windfall reported to be somewhere between €10 million and €15 million. It is the kind of clause that keeps paying out long after a player has walked out the door.

A hard goodbye for Gila

The move was not an easy one emotionally. Gila had grown into a fixture in Lazio’s backline across three seasons, and his farewell to the club was visibly raw. But at 25, with Milan and a five-year deal in front of him, the football logic was difficult to argue with. He swaps one Serie A side chasing a way back into Europe for another, and Milan will be counting on him to anchor theirs.
