How are WPL points awarded?
Two points for a win, none for a defeat, and one point each if a match ends without a result. Teams are ranked on their points total, highest first. Because every side plays only eight league matches, the gap between the top of the table and the cut-off is often a single result.
How many teams qualify for the WPL playoffs?
Three of the five. The side finishing top of the league table goes directly into the final. The teams placed second and third meet in the Eliminator, and the winner of that match joins the league leader in the final. The two teams finishing fourth and fifth are out.
Why is finishing top of the WPL table so valuable?
Because it skips a match. The league leader is in the final without playing a knockout game, while second and third have to win the Eliminator to get there. In a competition with only three playoff places and one Eliminator, first place is the difference between a guaranteed final and a single-match shootout.
What separates two teams level on points?
Net run rate. It weighs the rate a team has scored at across the season against the rate it has conceded at, so a side that wins its matches comfortably finishes above one that wins the same number narrowly. Over an eight-match league, one heavy win or defeat can move a team several places.
How many matches does each team play?
Eight in the league stage. The five teams play a double round robin, so every side meets each of the other four twice. That produces 20 league matches, and the Eliminator and the final take a completed season to 22.
When is the WPL played?
In the early part of the year. Seasons so far have been staged across February and March, running for roughly a month from the opening match to the final. Exact dates move from year to year and are set alongside the rest of the international calendar.
