Winless Pakistan face Bangladesh in a Women’s T20 World Cup must-win at Southampton

Pakistan are still chasing their first win of the Women’s T20 World Cup, and a Bangladesh side with a win already to their name awaits at Southampton on Saturday. Another defeat could all but end Pakistan’s semi-final hopes.

Winless Pakistan face Bangladesh in a Women’s T20 World Cup must-win at Southampton

Saturday’s meeting at the Rose Bowl carries very different stakes for the two sides walking out. Pakistan, still without a win at the Women’s T20 World Cup, are playing to keep their campaign breathing. Bangladesh, level at a win apiece, sense a chance to push towards the semi-finals. Same fixture, opposite moods.

Pakistan have lost both games so far, beaten by India and then South Africa, and sit fifth in Group 1. Only the top two from the group reach the semi-finals, and with India and Australia already pulling clear, another defeat would leave Fatima Sana’s side hanging by the thinnest of threads.

Bangladesh sense an opening

Bangladesh arrive in better shape. Nigar Sultana’s team opened with a six-wicket win over the Netherlands before running into Australia, who brushed them aside by nine wickets. A 1-1 record keeps them firmly in the mix, and they will back themselves against a Pakistan team low on belief. Win this, and Bangladesh take a real step towards the knockouts with matches still to come.

The batting will decide plenty. Pakistan have struggled to build or chase competitive totals, and captain Fatima Sana has been left to do too much with both bat and ball. Muneeba Ali needs to give the innings a base at the top, while the spin attack led by Sadia Iqbal remains Pakistan’s most reliable route to wickets.

What is at stake

For Bangladesh, Nigar will again be central, anchoring the middle order and steering an attack built around spin. Their challenge is consistency. They have shown they can win, then been outclassed inside the space of three days, and a side chasing the semi-finals cannot afford that kind of swing.

The match starts at 2:30pm in Southampton, which is 7pm IST, so Indian fans get an evening watch. Neither team can afford a slow start. Pakistan are playing for survival, Bangladesh for momentum, and in a group where the two heavyweights look settled, everything behind them is still up for grabs in games exactly like this one.
