KKR return to Eden Gardens with their season on the line as Rajasthan Royals come to town

Kolkata Knight Riders return home to Eden Gardens on Sunday with a single point from six matches and their IPL 2026 playoff hopes already evaporating. Rajasthan Royals, fresh off their first defeat of the season, are the worst possible opponents to run into.

Match 28 of IPL 2026 pits the league’s most disappointing title defence against one of its most convincing sides. KKR host Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on Sunday afternoon, with a 3:30 PM IST start, and the gap between the two teams in every respect is hard to ignore.

KKR have played six and won none. Their only point came from a rain-abandoned fixture against Punjab Kings. Their last outing, a five-wicket loss to Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, did nothing to suggest a team about to turn a corner. They sit bottom of the table, five clear losses into a campaign that was supposed to be about backing up their 2024 IPL title.

Rajasthan, by contrast, have been the form team of the season. Four wins from five, eight points, third on the table, and a balance between bat and ball that KKR simply cannot match right now. Their only defeat came last time out against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Riyan Parag’s side will want to put that behind them quickly.

Royals have the in-form batters and the in-form bowler

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been the story of the Rajasthan campaign. The teenager has 200 runs at a strike rate north of 250, and his ability to start fast has given RR the kind of powerplay platform every T20 side wants. Dhruv Jurel has been the steady hand behind him with 176 runs, and Ravi Bishnoi has picked up nine wickets at a time when spinners are doing the heavy lifting for most sides.

KKR’s own batting has been thin. Angkrish Raghuvanshi is the top scorer with 190 runs, which says as much about the rest of the order as it does about him. Vaibhav Arora, with seven wickets, has been a rare positive on the bowling side.

Eden Gardens has to be a factor eventually

KKR are back on home soil after two straight away defeats, and if there is anywhere they should be able to find a performance, it is here. Eden Gardens has always been kind to them, and the support at a Sunday afternoon match is likely to be loud regardless of how the season is going. Whether that translates into runs and wickets is another question.

The head-to-head record across 32 previous meetings reads KKR 16, RR 14, with two no results. It is close on paper, but it does not reflect the gulf between the two squads on current form. Rajasthan go in as clear favourites, and a loss here would leave KKR needing to win virtually every remaining game to reach the playoffs.
