India look to hit back at Stormont after a historic Ireland defeat

India return to Stormont on June 28 with their pride dented and a series suddenly on the line. Ireland’s 34-run win in the opening T20I was the first time they had beaten India in any format, and it leaves the tourists 1-0 down in a two-match series. Lose again in Belfast and India walk away from the trip with a result few saw coming. The second game starts at 6pm IST.

How the opener slipped away

Ireland posted 182 for 9 after being asked to bat, and the innings was built around their new captain Lorcan Tucker, who made 50, and Gareth Delany, who fell one short of a fifty on 49. India’s bowlers had their moments, with Harshit Rana taking 3 for 24, but a total of 182 always looked above par on the surface. The chase never settled. Abhishek Sharma top-scored with 49 but found little support, and India were bowled out for 148 with overs to spare.

The damage was done by two debutants. Matt Hollard, who finished with 3 for 28 and the player of the match award, struck early by removing Ishan Kishan and later accounted for the India captain Shreyas Iyer for 3. Jai Moondra, born in India and now playing for Ireland, marked his first international by dismissing Sanju Samson. For a batting order that looked strong on paper, being skittled inside the 20 overs was a poor night’s work.

What India need to fix

This is a side in transition. Suryakumar Yadav has been left out and Jasprit Bumrah rested to manage his workload, and Iyer has been handed the captaincy as India keep searching for a settled T20I leader in the post-Rohit Sharma era. The same group flies on to England for a five-match series starting July 1, so the Ireland leg doubles as preparation, and starting it with a series defeat would sting. The batting, in particular, needs a response. Too many starts went unconverted in the opener, and on a ground where 180 is chaseable, the top order has to bat deeper into the innings.

Iyer will also want a tidier night with the ball in hand from his attack. Rana aside, India leaked runs at the back end and let Ireland climb to a total that proved out of reach. Small margins, but in a two-game series there is no room left to carry them.

Ireland sense something special

For Ireland, this is a rare chance to turn a famous one-off into a series win. They have never beaten India before this week, let alone twice, and a home crowd that has already sold out the ground will fancy the upset. Tucker has made a confident start to his captaincy, and the two debutant seamers gave the attack a fresh edge. India remain favourites on talent alone, but Ireland have shown they are not here to make up the numbers. A second straight win would be one of the bigger results in their history.
