India chase a series lifeline at Trent Bridge after Old Trafford defeat

One down with three to play, India arrive at Trent Bridge on Tuesday needing the kind of night that turns a series around. England lead the five-match T20I series 1-0 after Jacob Bethell’s unbeaten 76 carried them home at Old Trafford, and a second home win in Nottingham would leave Shreyas Iyer’s side chasing the rubber for the rest of the tour.

The series has not gone the way India would have drawn it up. The opener at Chester-le-Street was washed out after Abhishek Sharma and Iyer had pushed them to 189 for 7, a total that felt like a missed chance the moment the rain arrived. At Old Trafford they again posted a competitive score, 190 for 7, only to watch England chase it down with an over to spare. Twice India have batted well enough to win, and twice they have nothing to show for it.

Iyer’s India need their bowling to stand up

The batting is not really the problem. Abhishek Sharma has looked in the mood at the top, Ishan Kishan chipped in with 49 at Old Trafford, and Iyer himself has runs behind him from the washed-out opener. What India have lacked is control with the ball at the back end, where Harry Brook in particular has hurt them. Arshdeep Singh went for a chastening over to the England captain in the second match, and death bowling is the box India most need to tick before Tuesday.

There is a lighter thread running through this tour too. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, still only 15, made his international debut at Old Trafford and struck two sixes in a brief 14 before being stumped. He is the youngest player India have ever picked, and whether he keeps his place or not, the sight of a teenager taking on England’s quicks without a flicker of nerves has been one of the tour’s better sub-plots.

England smell a lead worth protecting

England have their own reasons to feel good. Bethell’s calm in the chase at Old Trafford backed up the idea that this is a batting order with depth to burn, and Brook has looked in good nick at the top of it. Win at Trent Bridge, a ground that tends to reward strokeplay, and they go 2-0 up with the series firmly in their hands.

India cannot afford to think that far ahead. The maths is simple enough: lose on Tuesday and the series is as good as gone. The third T20I starts at 10pm IST.
