Feroza’s fifty earns Pakistan a consolation win as the Netherlands finish winless

Pakistan signed off from a difficult Women’s T20 World Cup with something to smile about, beating the Netherlands at Bristol on Saturday to claim their only win of the tournament. Gull Feroza’s unbeaten 63 set up a total the Dutch could never get close to, and for the debutants it was a fifth straight defeat that ends their first World Cup without a win.

Feroza holds a wobbly innings together

Batting first after winning the toss, Pakistan leaned almost entirely on Feroza. She opened the face to third man, swept hard, and timed the ball cleanly while wickets came and went at the other end, finishing on 63 not out from 52 balls with nine fours. Ayesha Zafar gave her the best support with 32, the pair adding 79 to take Pakistan to 102 for 2 with five overs left.

From there the innings stalled. Pakistan lost four wickets for 24 in the closing overs and never kicked on the way the platform deserved, closing on 126 for 6. Iris Zwilling was the pick of the Netherlands attack with 2 for 19, bowling a maiden in among her four overs, and Silver Siegers chipped in with 1 for 17. A target of 127 looked gettable on a decent Bristol surface.

The Dutch chase falls away

The Netherlands never threatened the target. They lost wickets at regular intervals through the middle overs, the required rate climbed beyond them, and they were bowled out for 89 in 18 overs. Pakistan’s bowlers shared the work and kept the pressure on throughout, and a 37-run win was as comfortable as that scoreline suggests.

Two winless campaigns, one consolation

Both sides had arrived at this game already out of the semi-final race, each beaten in their first four matches, so this was a battle to avoid finishing bottom of the group as much as anything. Pakistan will take it. A first win, however late and against fellow strugglers, beats going home with nothing, and Feroza’s form is a small bright spot to build on.

For the Netherlands, a first senior World Cup ends the hard way, with five defeats from five. The gap to the established sides was clear all tournament, but they have run into world-class attacks at every turn, and the experience of competing at this level should serve them well. Getting here was the achievement. The wins, they will hope, come next time.
