Bangladesh stun Australia by 86 runs to end a 21-year wait in Mirpur

Bangladesh produced one of the great upsets of their one-day history on Tuesday, beating Australia by 86 runs under the DLS method in the first ODI at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. It was only the second time they have beaten Australia in the 50-over format, and the first in 21 years.

Mosaddek Hossain, back in the side after four years away, anchored the innings with an unbeaten 86 and then chipped in with two wickets. Nahid Rana, regularly clocking speeds above 150kph, tore through the middle of Australia’s chase with 4 for 41. By the time a thunderstorm ended play, the visitors were 191 for 9 and well adrift of the revised target.

Mosaddek holds the innings together

Asked to bat first after Australia won the toss and chose to field, Bangladesh were given a brisk start by Tanzid Hasan, who made 54 off 44 balls. Najmul Hossain Shanto added 67 to keep the innings ticking, but it was Mosaddek who gave the total its weight. Coming in down the order, he finished 86 not out from 70 deliveries, striking seven fours and three sixes to drag Bangladesh to 284 for 8. Nathan Ellis was the pick of the Australian attack with 3 for 38.

It was a remarkable return for a player who had not featured for Bangladesh in any format for four years. His late hitting turned a competitive score into an imposing one, and it proved more than enough once the bowlers got to work.

Nahid Rana sets the chase alight

Australia never settled. Nahid Rana, the quick whose pace has made him one of the most talked-about bowlers in Bangladesh cricket, removed the top order in a fiery spell and finished with 4 for 41. Cameron Green offered resistance with an unbeaten 52 and Alex Carey made 47, but wickets kept falling around them. When rain arrived with Australia 191 for 9, they were already behind the DLS par score, and the officials confirmed an 86-run win for the hosts.

A wait that stretched back to Cardiff

Bangladesh’s only previous ODI win over Australia came on 18 June 2005 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the famous result built on Mohammad Ashraful’s century during the NatWest Series. That victory has been part of Bangladesh cricket folklore ever since, and a generation of players had grown up without adding to it. Beating a side that has won the men’s 50-over World Cup six times, even one missing several of its first-choice quicks, will rank among the country’s finest days at home.

The win hands Bangladesh a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, Australia’s first ODI tour of the country in 15 years. The tourists will look to level matters in the second ODI, but for one rain-soaked night in Mirpur, the hosts could savour a result two decades in the making.
