Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of IPL 2026 as CSK lose their left-arm spearhead

Chennai Super Kings have been dealt a serious blow with Khaleel Ahmed ruled out of the rest of IPL 2026 after scans revealed a Grade 2 quadricep tear suffered during the KKR match at Chepauk on April 14.

Khaleel Ahmed's IPL 2026 is over. Chennai Super Kings confirmed on Thursday that the 28-year-old left-arm seamer has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament after scans on his right quadricep returned far worse news than anyone inside the camp had hoped for.

Khaleel pulled up sharply in his run-up during CSK's home win over Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 14. He walked off five balls into what should have been his final over, initially clutching his right leg as if struggling with severe cramp. Rookie Gurjapneet Singh was asked to finish the over, and Khaleel did not return to the field.

What the scans showed

The diagnosis is worse than it looked in real time. Khaleel has a Grade 2 tear of the rectus femoris in his right quadricep, with reports describing a high-grade partial tear of the tendon and a complete tear of the direct head of the muscle. That is the sort of injury that needs weeks of controlled rehabilitation before a bowler can even begin to load up again.

CSK's medical team have put the timeline at 10 to 12 weeks minimum, which takes Khaleel comfortably past the IPL 2026 final. He is now working on a rehab plan that keeps the back half of the year, and any India selection conversations for the home summer, in focus.

A real blow at a bad time

CSK finally got their first win of the season against Delhi Capitals on April 11 and backed it up with a 32-run victory over KKR at Chepauk. Khaleel had been central to the new-ball plan all season, even if the numbers (two wickets in five games at an economy of 8.67) suggest he was still finding his rhythm. Losing him now, with Chennai still short on batting experience and MS Dhoni only just targeting his return around April 23, is about as unwelcome as blows come.

Left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary is the obvious like-for-like replacement from the existing squad, and right-arm quick Ramakrishna Ghosh offers the alternative of an extra batting option down the order. CSK's bigger problem is not one replacement for one game, it is who walks out over and over in the powerplay for the final stretch of the group stage.

What happens next

CSK's next match is against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18, and the selectors will almost certainly confirm Khaleel's replacement before then. Any incoming player will need to be signed for a fee within the base price of the one he is replacing, so the pool of high-end options is slim. A domestic seamer with IPL experience feels more likely than a high-profile overseas name at this stage of the season.

For Khaleel, the focus shifts to the long road back. A 10-to-12-week rehab in April puts a return window somewhere around the middle of the home season, which would give him time to push for a white-ball squad spot before any bilateral commitments ramp up.
