Crystal Palace snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle at Selhurst Park on Sunday after Jean-Philippe Mateta scored twice from the bench, capping the comeback with a penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Osula gives Newcastle the lead against the run of play

Palace had the better of the opening exchanges but it was Newcastle who struck first. Lewis Miley's delivery from the right was deflected by home defender Maxence Lacroix, and William Osula bundled the ball in from close range in the 43rd minute. It was a sucker punch for a Palace side that had been on top.

Oliver Glasner responded in the 65th minute by reshuffling his attack, introducing Ismaila Sarr, Mateta and Adam Wharton from the bench. The substitutions changed the game.

Mateta turns the match on its head

Palace pushed hard in the second half, and the equaliser arrived in the 80th minute. Munoz's ball into the box was headed back across goal by Tyrick Mitchell, and Mateta nodded in from close range for his first league goal since New Year's Day.

The winner came deep into added time. Sven Botman needlessly pulled back Jefferson Lerma inside the box to give away a penalty that nobody in the ground could argue with. Mateta stepped up and drilled the ball into the bottom corner to send Selhurst Park into a frenzy.

Blow to Newcastle's European hopes

The defeat leaves Newcastle five points behind seventh-placed Brentford and seriously dents their chances of qualifying for European competition. Eddie Howe's side created very little after taking the lead and were punished for sitting too deep in the closing stages.

For Palace, it was just their second home Premier League win since November, but the manner of it will feel worth double. Glasner's brave substitutions paid off handsomely.
