Woltemade and Osula sink West Ham 3-1 at St James' Park as Spurs hang on to the survival rope

Two goals in five minutes through Nick Woltemade and Will Osula put Newcastle in front, Osula added a second after the break, and West Ham's relegation fight now needs Tottenham to drop almost everything from their final two fixtures.

Newcastle ended West Ham's survival hopes for another week with a 3-1 win at St James' Park on Sunday, scoring twice inside 20 minutes through Nick Woltemade and Will Osula before Osula added a second in the second half to settle a game West Ham could not afford to lose.

Two goals in five minutes settle it early

Woltemade got the first in the 15th minute and Osula doubled it on 19, and from there the relegation-battle nerves stopped being Newcastle's problem. The home side controlled the tempo through the rest of the first half, and West Ham went in a goal down at the break despite needing to come out and chase. Osula then got his second in the 65th minute to take the game out of reach, Valentin Castellanos pulled one back four minutes later, and the scoreboard never moved again.

West Ham still need two Tottenham slips

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley were mathematically relegated weeks ago, and the third drop spot has come down to West Ham and Tottenham. West Ham went into this match two points behind Spurs in 18th, needing a win to put pressure on a London rival they had to overtake. They did not get it.

The arithmetic is now uncomfortable for the Hammers. Spurs still have two fixtures to West Ham's one, at Chelsea on Tuesday and Everton at home on the final weekend. West Ham have to beat Leeds at home on May 24 and need Spurs to drop almost everything from those six points, with a goal-difference swing on top because Tottenham went into Sunday with the better overall goal difference. Nothing is mathematically settled, but the realistic survival route now runs through results West Ham do not control.

Newcastle quietly finish a strong second half

For Newcastle this was a tidy end to a home season that has steadied them in the mid-table, and Eddie Howe's side now head into the final round with a chance to climb a couple of places. The result will frustrate everyone in claret and blue, but in black and white this was a job done without much fuss.
