Doku, Haaland and Marmoush punish Brentford as City cut Arsenal's lead to two with three to play
Manchester City beat Brentford 3-0 at the Etihad on Saturday night, with Jeremy Doku, Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush scoring after the break to drag the gap at the top of the Premier League down to two points with three matchdays still to come.
For an hour Pep Guardiola's side were stuck. Brentford defended deep, conceded little, and let the Etihad get nervous. Then Doku produced one of those moments that flatten a low block on his own.
Doku's curler breaks the deadlock
The opener arrived in the 60th minute. From a short corner on the left, Doku worked a yard, lost the ball, and watched it bounce back to him off a defender. He took the second chance, cutting inside onto his right and bending a finish into the top-right corner past Caoimhín Kelleher. It was the kind of finish City had been waiting all evening for.
Semenyo's cut-back, Haaland's scrap
The second came 15 minutes later, and it was the January signing's hand on the night. Antoine Semenyo, who joined from Bournemouth in a 64 million pound move that took City's twelve-month spend past 425 million, drove down the right and cut a low ball into the six-yard box. Haaland's first effort was blocked, but the Norwegian forced the rebound over the line through traffic. Not pretty, but a goal his afternoon needed.
Marmoush ends the night
Omar Marmoush, on as a second-half substitute, put the third away in stoppage time. This time Haaland was the provider, sliding a pass down the right channel for the Egyptian to slot into the far corner. From 0-0 with thirty minutes to play, City had won 3-0 inside ninety-two.
The title race is alive again
Arsenal lead the table on 76 points, with City now on 74 and three games still to play for both. Goal difference reads +41 to +40 in the Gunners' favour, so even the tiebreakers are tight. Mikel Arteta's side travel to West Ham on Sunday afternoon, and any slip at the London Stadium hands the initiative back to City. After looking like an exhausted afterthought a fortnight ago, Guardiola's team are back inside touching distance of a title that already looked spoken for.
Brentford finish the night still mid-table and outside the European places, with Keith Andrews's job in the run-in now about avoiding a flat fade rather than chasing anything bigger. For City, the run from here is straightforward: win, and wait for Arsenal to wobble.
