It is the sort of quarter-final the Champions League does to you sometimes. Seven goals, a sending off, a referee dragged into the story, and two late strikes that changed the whole thing. Bayern Munich 4, Real Madrid 3 at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night. Bayern through to the semi-finals 6-4 on aggregate. Real Madrid out of Europe again.

Arda Guler scored twice. Harry Kane got one. Kylian Mbappe pulled Madrid back in front before the break. For most of the 90 minutes it looked as if Alvaro Arbeloa's side might just edge back through. Then Luis Diaz and Michael Olise happened in the last few minutes, and the tie flipped.

A wild first half

Guler opened the scoring inside the first minute. Aleksandar Pavlovic levelled for Bayern in the sixth, which should have settled the tie. It did not. Guler got his second in the 29th, Kane pulled another back in the 38th, and Mbappe struck in the 42nd to send the sides in at 3-2 to Madrid at the break.

That first 45 was the kind of football managers pretend to hate. Open, chaotic, no defensive shape anywhere. Bayern's midfield could not get a grip on Guler. Madrid's back line could not handle Kane's movement in behind. The Allianz crowd spent most of it on their feet, which might have been to get a better view of the chaos rather than to celebrate.

Camavinga red card changed everything

The turning point was not a goal. In the 86th minute, referee Slavko Vincic sent Eduardo Camavinga off for a second yellow after a tangle with Kane that did not look much. Madrid's players were furious. Bayern's had appealed, Vincic had checked, and out came the second card. Madrid finished the tie a man down with four minutes plus stoppage time to hold on.

They could not. Diaz fired inside the right post in the 89th to make it 3-3. Olise then scored the winner deep in stoppage time, cutting inside and finishing to send the Allianz into delirium. 4-3 on the night. 6-4 on aggregate. Madrid done.

What it means

Bayern will play Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals, with the first leg scheduled for April 28. Vincent Kompany's side now have a real chance of reaching the Budapest final. They have not looked this comfortable in Europe for a couple of seasons, and the Kane-Diaz-Olise front line has a few goals in it yet.

For Madrid, the exit ends any hope of a European trophy in a season that has already slipped away in La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Arbeloa, who took over from Xabi Alonso in January, is now widely expected to lose the job in the summer. The inquest in Madrid will be loud, the Camavinga red will be replayed a thousand times, and none of it will change the aggregate score. Bayern earned this one.
