Winless KKR host in-form Lucknow at Eden Gardens with pressure piling up on Rahane
Kolkata Knight Riders are still searching for their first win of IPL 2026, and their search returns them to Eden Gardens on Thursday night against a Lucknow Super Giants side that has just found some form. KKR sit bottom of the table after back-to-back defeats to Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad, followed by the rained-off game against Punjab Kings offering one point and not much else.
Ajinkya Rahane's group will take some confidence from the fact that this is their third straight home fixture. The problem is that Eden has not been the fortress it usually is, and LSG have actually had the better of this fixture since 2022, leading the head to head 4-2 and winning here more than once.
Pant's Lucknow arrive with momentum
LSG opened their campaign with a loss to Delhi Capitals but bounced back with a much-needed win over Sunrisers Hyderabad, with Rishabh Pant anchoring the chase with a half century. It was the kind of innings that settles a dressing room, and Pant will fancy the Eden Gardens surface if it plays true.
Mohammed Shami, who took two for nine against SRH, is the kind of seamer who will enjoy the early movement that this pitch has offered in the evenings. With rain having fallen around Kolkata in recent days, the new ball could talk for longer than usual. That is bad news for a KKR top order that has not quite clicked.
What KKR need
The obvious answer is runs at the top. Blessing Muzarabani has been their best bowler so far, picking up four wickets including a standout four for 41, and his height has given him extra bounce at Eden. What KKR really need is for their batters to post a total he can defend. A winless start is recoverable, but three becomes four very quickly in a format this short, and Rahane will be aware that his side cannot afford to let Lucknow pile on a third straight loss on home turf.
Weather could still play a part. Showers are forecast around the city during the day, though the match window is expected to stay dry. Toss could be important if there is any moisture in the surface at the start.
