Kohli overtakes Rohit Sharma for most runs against a single team in IPL history

The tussle between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for IPL batting milestones added another chapter on Sunday night. Kohli's 28 off 18 balls against Chennai Super Kings at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium took his career tally against CSK past Rohit Sharma's haul against Kolkata Knight Riders, making him the player with the most runs scored against a single opponent in IPL history.
A record reclaimed inside four overs
Rohit had grabbed the record just days earlier. His blistering 78 against KKR on March 29 pushed his career total against the Knight Riders past Kohli's long-standing mark against Punjab Kings. Kohli took barely four overs to wrestle it back, hitting two fours and a six before Anshul Kamboj had him caught by Shivam Dube at long-on for 28.
It was hardly Kohli's flashiest knock. But it did not need to be. Across 36 matches against CSK spanning 19 IPL seasons, the runs have piled up steadily since his debut in 2008. He now has 10 fifty-plus scores against the five-time champions, more than any batter has managed against a single opposition in IPL history.
RCB had plenty in reserve
Kohli's departure barely dented the defending champions. Tim David took over with a savage 70 off 25 balls, Devdutt Padikkal chipped in with 50 off 29, and skipper Rajat Patidar finished unbeaten on 48 off 19 as RCB posted 250 for 3, the highest team total in IPL 2026. CSK were bowled out for 207 in reply to suffer their third straight defeat.
A rivalry with plenty of life left
Kohli's average against CSK sits around 38 at a strike rate close to 128. Rohit's numbers against KKR are almost identical. The fact that Rohit held the record for barely a week before Kohli snatched it back tells its own story about two players who have been pushing each other since the early days of the IPL.
Rohit, at 38, and Kohli, at 37, are deep into their careers now. Neither shows much sign of letting up. With RCB and CSK not scheduled to meet again until Phase 2 of the tournament, the next move belongs to Rohit whenever Mumbai face KKR.
