When Royal Challengers Bengaluru walk out for their IPL 2026 opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28, they will carry the memory of 11 fans who never made it home from the biggest night in the franchise's history.

RCB confirmed on Monday that players will wear jersey number 11 during the pre-match warm-up at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Black armbands will follow for the game itself. And 11 seats inside the ground will remain empty, not just for the opener, but for every domestic and international match played there going forward.

What happened on June 4

The crowd crush took place outside the Chinnaswamy on June 4, 2025, during a public felicitation event marking RCB's maiden IPL title win. Overcrowding and narrow passageways turned celebration into tragedy. Eleven people died and 56 were injured.

The Karnataka government launched a magisterial inquiry. An FIR was filed against the franchise, the event management company and the Karnataka State Cricket Association.

Memorial and security overhaul

Beyond the jerseys and vacant seats, a memorial plaque will be unveiled near the inner stadium entrance before the first ball is bowled on Saturday. The stadium screens will display the names of the victims, followed by a minute of silence.

RCB have also invested around 7 crore rupees in crowd management upgrades for IPL 2026, including AI-enabled CCTV surveillance, wider entry corridors and additional security staff. Bengaluru City Police have introduced digital-only ticketing and a multi-layered entry system for all matches at the Chinnaswamy this season.

A different kind of opener

Saturday's game against SRH was always going to be big. It is the first match of the IPL 2026 season, the first under RCB's new ownership after the Aditya Birla consortium completed a $1.78 billion takeover, and the first since Rajat Patidar took over the captaincy for RCB's title defence.

Now it carries something heavier too. The franchise has made it clear this is not just about symbolism. The empty seats, the armbands, the plaque, all of it is meant to stay. Whether the security changes work as promised will be tested in real time when tens of thousands of fans pour through the Chinnaswamy gates on Saturday evening.
