Maguire red card costs Manchester United as Bournemouth fight back for 2-2 draw

Manchester United looked set to strengthen their grip on third place when they led 2-1 with nine minutes of normal time left at the Vitality Stadium. Bruno Fernandes had opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 61st minute after Alex Jimenez brought down Matheus Cunha, and although Ryan Christie pulled one back six minutes later, a Fernandes corner that deflected off James Hill in the 71st minute appeared to have settled things.
Maguire's moment of madness
Then came the 78th minute. Evanilson burst past the United defence and into the box, where Maguire caught him with a clumsy challenge. The referee pointed to the spot and reached for the red card, judging that Maguire had denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Teenager Eli Junior Kroupi, on as a substitute, showed remarkable composure to bury the penalty three minutes later and bring Bournemouth level at 2-2.
United dug in with ten men through nine minutes of stoppage time, and Carrick will feel his side showed character to at least hold on for a point. But the mood in the away end told its own story. This was a match they controlled for long stretches, and two points were thrown away by one reckless moment.
What it means for the table
The draw keeps United third on 55 points, six behind Manchester City and 15 adrift of runaway leaders Arsenal. Carrick has done a remarkable job since taking charge in January, hauling the club from seventh to third, but nights like this show how fine the margins are in the race for Champions League qualification. Bournemouth sit in tenth after a battling display that underlined their resilience under pressure.
United now face a quick turnaround with a busy schedule ahead, and Maguire's suspension will leave Carrick short at centre-back for the next match. It is a frustration the interim boss could have done without.
