Enzo Fernandez's relationship with Chelsea has taken another step in the wrong direction. According to reporting from El Chiringuito in Spain and follow-ups in the English press, the Argentina midfielder is ready to submit a formal transfer request at Stamford Bridge in an attempt to force a move to Real Madrid when the summer window opens.

The situation has been simmering for a few weeks. Fernandez was handed a two-match internal suspension by Liam Rosenior after the March international break for public comments in which he spoke warmly about the idea of living in Madrid and cited the language and culture as a fit for his family. The message inside the Chelsea camp was that he had crossed a line. The message outside it was that his head was already somewhere else.

Chelsea's valuation

Chelsea's public stance remains firm. The club value Fernandez at around 150 million euros, roughly 131 million pounds, and are in no mood to accept anything close to a discount given the fee they paid Benfica for him in January 2023. Real Madrid, meanwhile, are reported to be unwilling to meet that figure and have begun quietly sounding out alternatives in case the move does not get over the line. Vitinha at Paris Saint-Germain has been mentioned as a Plan B.

What has changed is the signal from inside Chelsea. Fernandez is no longer viewed as one of the club's untouchables, and reports this week suggest the board would consider a sale at the right price rather than risk another tense summer if the player digs his heels in. That is a meaningful shift from where the briefing was even a few months ago.

What Fernandez has done this season

On the pitch, Fernandez has been one of Chelsea's more consistent performers. He has contributed 12 goals and six assists across 46 appearances in the 2025-26 campaign and has captained the side for long spells in the absence of Reece James. A buyer would be getting a 25-year-old midfielder with a Champions League resume, tournament experience with Argentina and a clear appetite for a bigger stage.

From Real Madrid's side, the interest is genuine but conditional. Álvaro Arbeloa is happy to add another controller in midfield, and Florentino Perez is not averse to a marquee signing that doubles as a statement. The sticking point has always been the price, and neither club is likely to blink before the summer window actually opens. A transfer request from the player would not instantly break the standoff, but it would change the tone of every conversation from that point onward.

The saga has the feel of a story that will run all the way into June. For now, the most accurate description is that both sides are moving their pieces rather than their money.
