Enzo Fernandez Refuses to Commit Future to Chelsea After Champions League Exit

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has refused to rule out leaving the club this summer, telling ESPN Argentina "we'll see" when asked about his future following the 8-2 aggregate Champions League elimination by PSG.

Fernandez made the comments after Chelsea's 3-0 second-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge on March 17, which completed an 8-2 aggregate loss. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola and Senny Mayulu scored for PSG on the night. Asked by ESPN Argentina whether he could guarantee he would still be at Chelsea next season, the 25-year-old said: "I don't know, there are eight games left and the FA Cup. Then there's the World Cup, and then we'll see."

Real Madrid interest grows

Real Madrid have tracked Fernandez for some time and reportedly view him as a long-term replacement for the retired Toni Kroos. Sources close to the Spanish club suggest Chelsea have indicated they would listen to offers, though the asking price is expected to be in the region of the 121 million euros they paid Benfica for the midfielder in January 2023.

PSG also hold interest in Fernandez, and given they just knocked Chelsea out of Europe, the idea of losing a key player to the same club would sting even more at Stamford Bridge.

Rosenior sidesteps the question

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior said he had not seen Fernandez's interview when asked about it. "It's hard for me right now," Rosenior told reporters. "I need to focus on the games we have coming up rather than transfer speculation." It was a diplomatic non-answer from a manager whose squad could look very different by August.

Chelsea's summer could get messy

Fernandez is not the only Chelsea player whose future feels uncertain. The club are out of the Champions League and sit in a battle for European qualification through the Premier League, with eight games remaining. If they miss out on a top-four finish, keeping their highest-profile players becomes significantly harder.

Fernandez signed an eight-and-a-half-year deal when he joined Chelsea, tying him to the club until 2032. But long contracts mean little when a player wants out. He has scored eight Premier League goals this season from 29 appearances, numbers that will attract serious attention from clubs with Champions League football to offer.
