Newcastle looked comfortable for long stretches of this one. Anthony Gordon put the home side ahead after just 10 minutes, pouncing on a defensive error by Luke O'Nien to score his fifth league goal of the season, and the Magpies controlled possession for most of the first half. Sven Botman even rattled the post before the break.

Second-half turnaround

Sunderland came out a different side after the interval. Regis Le Bris clearly had words at half time because the visitors pressed higher and played with more urgency from the restart. The equaliser arrived on 57 minutes when a corner caused chaos in the Newcastle box. Brobbey's initial effort was blocked on the line by Dan Burn, but Chemsdine Talbi reacted quickest to bundle in the rebound from close range.

Newcastle thought they had retaken the lead through Malick Thiaw midway through the second half, but the goal was ruled out after Jacob Murphy was judged to have interfered with the goalkeeper from an offside position. That decision seemed to knock the stuffing out of Eddie Howe's side.

Brobbey breaks Newcastle hearts

The game looked destined for a draw until substitute Enzo Le Fee swung in a cross from the left in the 90th minute. The ball deflected off Aaron Ramsdale and fell perfectly for Brobbey, who stuck out a foot to prod the ball over the line. St James' Park went silent. The away end lost its collective mind.

The scenes that followed were wild. Brobbey sprinted to the corner flag, teammates piling on top of him. Multiple yellow cards flew in the aftermath as emotions boiled over. Joelinton picked one up for Newcastle, while Brobbey, Noah Sadiki, Lutsharel Geertruida and Reinildo Mandava were all booked for Sunderland in the closing moments.

Derby day belongs to Sunderland again

The result stretches Sunderland's unbeaten league run against their Tyneside rivals to 11 games. Newcastle have not beaten Sunderland at home since October 2010, a wait that now covers more than 15 years. That run includes Sunderland's years in the Championship, but it makes this feel like something deeper than just three points.

Sunderland move to 11th on 43 points with the win, climbing above Newcastle, who drop to 12th on 42. For a promoted side playing their first top-flight derby in years, that will taste very sweet.
