Barcelona hammer Newcastle 7-2 to storm into Champions League quarter-finals

Newcastle walked into Camp Nou needing something special after the first leg finished 1-1 at St James' Park. They walked out wondering what hit them.
Raphinha sets the tone early
Barcelona wasted no time. Raphinha opened the scoring inside six minutes, cutting inside from the right and curling a shot beyond the Newcastle goalkeeper. Anthony Elanga equalised shortly after to give Newcastle hope, but Marc Bernal restored Barcelona's lead in the 18th minute, converting from close range after Gerard Martin headed a Raphinha free-kick across the six-yard box.
Elanga hit back again to make it 2-2, and for a spell it looked like Newcastle might survive the onslaught. Then came the turning point. Lamine Yamal stepped up in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time and slotted home a penalty to send Barcelona into the break with a 3-2 lead.
Second-half demolition
Whatever Hansi Flick said at half-time worked. Barcelona scored four more goals in 21 second-half minutes to turn a competitive tie into a rout. Fermin Lopez made it 4-2 in the 51st minute before Robert Lewandowski took over, scoring twice in five minutes (56' and 61') to leave Newcastle gasping.
Raphinha completed the destruction with his second of the night in the 72nd minute. The final whistle brought a 7-2 scoreline and an 8-3 aggregate that tells you everything about the gulf in quality once Barcelona hit their stride.
Atletico Madrid await in the last eight
Barcelona now face Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, with the first leg scheduled for April 7. For Newcastle, it is a painful exit from their first deep Champions League run in years. Eddie Howe's side competed for 40 minutes, but once that Yamal penalty went in, the walls came down.
Lewandowski's brace takes his Champions League tally to new heights this season, while Raphinha's all-round display earned him a perfect 10 from several rating outlets. Barcelona look like genuine contenders for the trophy.
