Fichajes report puts Atletico at front of the queue

Matthijs de Ligt's time at Manchester United could be nearing an end. Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Atletico Madrid have identified the Netherlands international as a primary target for the summer transfer window, with De Ligt's representatives said to be exploring options ahead of a potential move.

United are reportedly open to selling the centre-back for around 40 million euros, a figure that would represent a loss on the 45 million euros (plus five million in add-ons) they paid Bayern Munich in 2024. The 26-year-old started every Premier League match under Ruben Amorim before a back injury in late November sidelined him for the rest of the campaign.

Gimenez's departure creates a gap in Simeone's defence

Atletico's interest in De Ligt stems directly from the expected exit of Jose Gimenez. The Uruguayan, who has spent 13 years at the club, lost his starting place after Marc Pubill emerged alongside David Hancko as Diego Simeone's preferred central defensive pairing. A gentleman's agreement reportedly allows Gimenez to leave on a free transfer this summer, and Inter Milan have already made contact over a potential deal.

With Gimenez heading for the exit, Atletico need experienced cover, and De Ligt fits the profile. He is comfortable playing in a back three, has Champions League pedigree stretching back to his Ajax days, and is still only 26. The injury record is the obvious concern, but Atletico evidently believe it is manageable at the right price.

United have defensive depth to absorb the sale

From United's perspective, the maths work. De Ligt has managed just 14 appearances across all competitions this season, and interim manager Michael Carrick has built a functional defence around Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, and Harry Maguire since taking charge in January. Ayden Heaven, who has impressed in cup outings, represents the long-term future. Recouping 40 million euros for a player who has barely featured since November would free up funds for other areas of a squad that still needs investment.

Whether Atletico are willing to meet that asking price remains to be seen. Simeone's side are in the midst of a strong Champions League run and sit comfortably in La Liga's top four, but their transfer budget has historically been more modest than those of Barcelona and Real Madrid. A fee closer to 30 million euros could be where negotiations eventually land.
