Punjab Kings host Gujarat Titans in battle of contrasting philosophies tonight

Two of the IPL’s most ambitious squads meet fresh at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh, with the first ball due at 7:30 PM IST. Punjab reached the final in 2025 but fell short. Gujarat made the playoffs but never looked like winning the whole thing. Both franchises spent big at the auction to fix what went wrong.
Punjab’s firepower versus Gujarat’s control
Punjab have built a squad that screams aggression. Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya are expected to attack from the first over, with Iyer anchoring the middle order alongside Shashank Singh and Musheer Khan. Marco Jansen gives them a left-arm pace option who can bat, while Marcus Stoinis adds finishing muscle lower down.
The bowling unit looks sharp on paper. Arshdeep Singh and Xavier Bartlett should share the new ball, with Yuzvendra Chahal operating through the middle overs. Lockie Ferguson is unavailable for the first few weeks due to paternity leave, so Ricky Ponting will need to lean on Harpreet Brar and Yash Thakur early in the tournament.
Gujarat, by contrast, prefer patience. Gill and Sai Sudharsan like to build an innings rather than blast from ball one. Jos Buttler, who endured a grim T20 World Cup earlier this year, will be keen to prove that was an aberration rather than a decline. The Titans added Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada to sit alongside Rashid Khan, giving them one of the most complete bowling attacks in the competition.
What the RR-CSK result tells both teams
Monday’s match between Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings was a reminder that conditions in March can be tricky for batting sides. CSK were bowled out for 127 on a surface that offered seam movement, and Rajasthan’s pace trio of Jofra Archer, Nandre Burger and Ravindra Jadeja made the ball talk. Punjab’s seamers will fancy their chances of doing something similar at Mullanpur, where the pitch has historically offered something for the quicks early on.
Gujarat’s response to that kind of challenge will be telling. They have the batting depth to recover from a slow start, but if Siraj and Rabada are firing with the new ball, they might not need a big total to defend.
The captaincy contest
Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 before moving to Punjab. He is a proven IPL-winning captain who backs his instincts in the field. Gill, still just 26, is growing into the role but has yet to lead a team to a trophy. How they handle pressure moments tonight could set the tone for both campaigns.
This is the kind of fixture where reputations are built early. Whoever wins gets confidence. Whoever loses gets questions.
