Pietersen quits as Delhi Capitals mentor two weeks before IPL 2026 opener

The former England captain confirmed his departure through a post on X on Saturday, ending a short stint that began in February 2025. Pietersen helped guide the Capitals through IPL 2025, where they finished fifth with 15 points under captain Axar Patel and narrowly missed the playoffs.
Time constraints force the decision
"I cannot be a mentor for Delhi Capitals in this IPL season," Pietersen wrote. "I cannot commit to the time that the job requires." He added that he wished the players well and would be watching from the commentary box. Pietersen, now 45, has worked across broadcasting and coaching since retiring from professional cricket, and the mentoring role at DC had been one of several commitments on his calendar.
What Pietersen brought to DC in 2025
His time with the Capitals was defined by a relaxed dressing room atmosphere and a focus on developing younger players. Ashutosh Sharma was the biggest beneficiary. The 26-year-old smashed an unbeaten 66 off 31 balls on the opening night of IPL 2025 against Lucknow Super Giants, hauling his side over the line in a 210-run chase with one wicket to spare. Pietersen also built a strong rapport with KL Rahul, who hit 539 runs from 13 matches last season.
It was Pietersen's second stint with the franchise. He had previously played for the Delhi Daredevils in 2012 and 2014 (missing the 2013 season through injury), even captaining them in that final season, though results were grim. They won just two of 14 matches under his leadership and finished dead last.
What next for Delhi Capitals
The Capitals open their IPL 2026 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on April 1. They follow that with home matches against Mumbai Indians on April 4 and Gujarat Titans on April 8. The franchise has not yet announced a replacement for the mentoring role.
The IPL season begins on March 28 when Royal Challengers Bengaluru host Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru.
