Pathirana declared fit by Sri Lanka Cricket and cleared to join KKR for IPL 2026

KKR paid 18 crore for Matheesha Pathirana at the IPL 2026 auction knowing full well they were buying a player recovering from a calf injury. On Friday, the gamble took a step towards paying off. Sri Lanka Cricket has declared the 23-year-old fit and issued his No Objection Certificate, clearing the way for him to join the KKR setup.

The injury and the rehab

Pathirana picked up the calf strain during Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup match against Australia in February, forcing him out of the remainder of the tournament. Dilshan Madushanka replaced him in the squad. Since then, Pathirana has been rehabilitating under the supervision of SLC's medical team in Sri Lanka.

As recently as March 10, Pathirana confirmed he was still in Colombo and had not yet travelled to India. The fitness clearance on Friday means he can now make that trip, though KKR are not expecting him to be match-ready for the opening weeks of the season.

When will he actually play?

That is the question KKR fans are asking. Head coach Abhishek Nayar has said Pathirana is projected to be match-fit around mid-April, which means he could miss anywhere from two to four matches depending on how the schedule falls. KKR open their campaign on March 29 against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede, and Pathirana will almost certainly not be available for that game.

Sri Lanka Cricket has implemented a strict fitness-first policy this year, requiring all players to pass a physical performance test before receiving an NOC for overseas leagues. Pathirana clearing that test is encouraging for KKR, even if they need to wait a few more weeks for his services.

Why KKR need him badly

Pace bowling is already a headache for Kolkata. Harshit Rana has been ruled out for the entire IPL 2026 season with a ligament injury, leaving a significant hole in the attack. Getting Pathirana back, even by mid-April, gives KKR their most potent death-overs weapon. The slingy right-armer, whose action draws constant comparisons to Lasith Malinga, has built a reputation as one of the most effective yorker bowlers in T20 cricket.

Until Pathirana arrives, KKR will need to lean on their remaining pace options and hope that the rest of the bowling group can hold things together through the opening phase.
