New Zealand look to seal series against South Africa in Wellington fourth T20I

New Zealand can wrap up the five-match series on Sunday when they face South Africa in the fourth T20I at Sky Stadium in Wellington, carrying a 2-1 lead after a dominant eight-wicket win in Auckland on March 20.

The Black Caps have seized control of this series after a shaky start. South Africa won the opener comfortably, but New Zealand have hit back with consecutive victories. The third match in Auckland was particularly one-sided: South Africa managed just 136 for 9 in their 20 overs before Tom Latham and Devon Conway ripped the chase apart with a 96-run opening stand. Latham finished unbeaten on 63, guiding the hosts home with nearly four overs to spare.

Ferguson's quiet mastery

Lockie Ferguson's figures of 1 for 9 from four overs barely tell the story. The right-arm quick was virtually unplayable in Auckland, beating the bat repeatedly and choking South Africa's middle order at a time when they needed acceleration. Named Player of the Match, Ferguson has been the glue holding this New Zealand bowling attack together throughout the series.

South Africa, by contrast, look flat. Nqobani Mokoena top-scored with 26 in the third match, and no batsman managed to build an innings of substance. Captain Keshav Maharaj will need his senior players to step up if South Africa are to avoid a series defeat. Losing this match would make Sunday's fifth T20I in Christchurch a dead rubber, and that is not the way this squad wants to end their New Zealand tour.

Wellington conditions could play a part

Sky Stadium is known for its wind. Wellington's famous gusts can turn routine catches into adventures and make bowling lengths unpredictable. Both sides have experienced players in their ranks who have played at the venue before, but the conditions tend to reward teams that adapt quickly. New Zealand's home advantage should count for something here.

A series win would be a strong way for the Black Caps to close out their home summer, especially after their run to the T20 World Cup final earlier this month. South Africa need a response, and quickly, or this tour will end with very little to show for it.
