Harshit Rana ruled out of IPL 2026 as KKR face pace bowling headache two weeks before opener

Kolkata Knight Riders will be without their 24-year-old seamer for the entire IPL 2026 season after a knee injury sustained during a T20 World Cup warm-up match in February continues to keep him sidelined.

Harshit Rana's absence had already cost India during the T20 World Cup, and now it will cost KKR through the IPL as well. The right-arm quick, who took 19 wickets during KKR's 2024 title-winning campaign and added 15 more in 2025, has been officially ruled out of the entire 2026 season following knee surgery on February 9.

How the injury happened

Rana went down during India's warm-up match against South Africa on February 4, bowling just one over before limping off the field. The BCCI's medical team ruled him unfit for the T20 World Cup, with Mohammed Siraj called up as his replacement. More than five weeks later, his recovery timeline still does not allow for any competitive cricket before the IPL wraps up.

What it means for KKR's pace attack

The timing could hardly be worse. KKR already lost Mustafizur Rahman before a ball was bowled after the BCCI instructed franchises to release Bangladeshi players amid diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh. Now, with Rana also gone and reports suggesting Matheesha Pathirana is nursing a calf problem, the defending champions' fast bowling stocks look worryingly thin.

KKR have not yet named a direct replacement for Rana. The franchise is expected to lean on Vaibhav Arora, who took 11 wickets during the 2024 title run, along with Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi and Akash Deep. Names like Akash Madhwal and Simarjeet Singh have been floated as potential additions.

Muzarabani fills the Mustafizur gap

There is at least one piece of good news on the bowling front. Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani has been signed as Mustafizur's replacement and is expected to arrive in Kolkata on March 17. The tall quick had a strong T20 World Cup, where his steep bounce and ability to hit hard lengths troubled top batting lineups. His figures of 4-17 against Australia were among the best spells of the tournament.

Muzarabani left his Pakistan Super League contract with Islamabad United to take up the IPL deal, and his 106 T20I wickets from 89 matches give KKR an experienced option at the top of the innings.

A tricky start for the defending champions

KKR open their IPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on March 29, the second day of the tournament. Between Rana's absence, Pathirana's fitness concerns, and the loss of squad members like Andre Russell, Quinton de Kock and Rahmanullah Gurbaz at the pre-season auction, this is a very different KKR side to the one that lifted the trophy in 2024. Whether Cameron Green, signed for a record-breaking 25.20 crore at the December auction, and the spin duo of Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy can carry the team remains the big question heading into the new season.
