The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium's fate as an IPL 2026 venue could be settled today. Karnataka's Expert Committee is scheduled to convene on Monday, March 16, to receive the final report on the stadium's readiness after months of safety upgrades following the stampede that killed 11 people during RCB's title celebrations in June 2025.

What the committee will decide

The panel is expected to review a mock demonstration of match-day arrangements and a detailed presentation by the Karnataka State Cricket Association on the infrastructural changes made since the tragedy. New safety measures include multiple additional entry gates, wider existing entrances, upgraded peripheral infrastructure and dedicated routes for emergency services, all in line with the Justice D'Cunha Committee's recommendations.

No major cricket match has been held at the venue since the incident, making today's decision a significant moment for the ground and for RCB's home schedule.

IPL 2026 opener hangs in the balance

The BCCI has pencilled in Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Sunrisers Hyderabad as the opening match of IPL 2026 on March 28, with the Chinnaswamy as the proposed venue. The first phase of the schedule, running from March 28 to April 12, includes 20 matches across 10 venues. The BCCI has made it clear that Bengaluru's inclusion is subject to the Expert Committee's green light.

If cleared, RCB are expected to play five of their seven home games at the Chinnaswamy, with the remaining two shifted to Raipur. If the committee raises further objections, the BCCI would need to find an alternative venue at very short notice.

Broader IPL 2026 picture

The 19th edition of the IPL runs from March 28 to May 31 with 10 teams contesting 84 matches. The full schedule beyond April 12 is still pending, as the BCCI awaits state assembly election dates in three states, which will affect security arrangements. Meanwhile, the second match of the season sees Mumbai Indians host Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29.
