Australia eliminated as Zimbabwe progress after rain washout

Persistent showers at the Pallekele International Stadium meant the match was called off without a ball being bowled, with both teams awarded one point each. The result lifted Zimbabwe to five points in the standings, a total Australia can no longer surpass even with one group match remaining.
Australia’s campaign had already been under pressure following defeats to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, leaving them reliant on other results to keep qualification hopes alive. The washout officially ended their chances of reaching the Super Eights.
Zimbabwe advance alongside Sri Lanka from Group B, marking a significant achievement for the Chevrons as they progress to the next phase of the tournament.
It is the first time since 2009 that Australia have failed to move beyond the group stage of a T20 World Cup, highlighting a dramatic shift in Group B’s balance of power.
