It took Massimiliano Allegri less than a week to go from out of work to in demand again. Sacked by AC Milan on Monday, he had a full verbal agreement to take over at Napoli by the middle of the week. For a coach whose career was supposedly winding down, that is some turnaround.

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis now has his man on a two-year deal, with Allegri lined up to replace Antonio Conte at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The agreement is verbal for now, but the direction of travel is clear.

From the San Siro exit to Naples

Allegri's Milan exit was brutal and quick. The club pulled the trigger on Monday once their failure to qualify for the Champions League was confirmed on the final day of the Serie A season. He was not the only one shown the door either. Milan also cleared out chief executive Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare and technical director Geoffrey Moncada in the same clean-out.

Days later, he was the front-runner for one of the biggest jobs in Italy. Conte had already left Napoli by mutual consent once the season ended, and De Laurentiis wanted a coach who has won before rather than a project. Allegri reportedly saw off competition from Vincenzo Italiano, the outgoing Bologna coach, as talks sped up over a single 24-hour window.

What Allegri walks into

This is not a rebuild. Conte won the Scudetto in his first season in charge, and even after losing the title to Inter this time around, the squad he leaves behind is built to compete. That suits Allegri, who has always been at his best managing winning sides under pressure rather than constructing one from scratch.

His style will divide opinion in Naples, as it does everywhere. Allegri is a pragmatist who prizes a clean sheet over a spectacle. It won him five league titles at Juventus, and it also drew plenty of criticism from fans who wanted to see more. Napoli's support, used to Conte's intensity, will want to know quickly whether Allegri can keep them at the top.

Not done until the ink dries

There is one loose end. Allegri still has to settle his contractual situation with Milan before he can put pen to paper at Napoli, and the lawyers on both sides are working through the paperwork. Until that is sorted, this stays a verbal agreement rather than a signed contract.

The expectation, though, is that it gets done. Barring a late twist, Allegri will be in the home dugout when Napoli kick off their 2026-27 campaign, charged with chasing a title back from Inter and proving there is plenty left in a manager Milan decided they could do without.
