Real Madrid keep Rüdiger on a one-year extension as Saudi and Juventus offers fall short

Antonio Rüdiger has accepted Real Madrid's one-year renewal offer and will stay at the Bernabéu next season, ending a tug of war that drew interest from Juventus in Italy and a heavyweight bid from Saudi Arabia. The 33-year-old centre-back's current deal expires at the end of this campaign, and the new agreement covers 2026-27.
Reports out of Spain via AS this week say Rüdiger had asked for two years but conceded once it became clear the club would not break its over-30s rule. Madrid hold every senior player above that age on rolling single-year extensions, and they were not going to make Rüdiger the exception.
Why the offer was only one year
The over-30s policy is the one Real Madrid applied to Luka Modrić, Toni Kroos and Nacho through the last stretches of their contracts. The logic is simple. The club wants the option to walk away after each season without paying out a long deal in a department where age catches up fast. The structure cushions Madrid against a sharper decline than expected.
For Rüdiger, the case to take it was the easier one. He still believes there is more to win at Madrid, and walking away from the Bernabéu for a Serie A return or a Saudi deal at this stage would have closed off the European nights he signed up for.
What it means for the back line
Madrid's centre-back rotation thins fast without him. Éder Militão has spent another stretch of the season on the treatment table after a long lay-off, David Alaba's body has been less reliable with each passing season, and Aurélien Tchouaméni already shuttles between midfield and the back line as cover. Keeping Rüdiger means the new season starts with a senior option rather than a gap, and a dressing-room voice in a side that has lost a generation of leaders.
The deal also pulls Juventus out of a defensive search that had been quietly leaning on him as a free option. They will have to spend elsewhere now, and the European market for a 33-year-old international defender just got that bit smaller.
