Punjab Kings made light of what looked like a daunting target at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh PCA Stadium, racing to 223 for four in 18.5 overs to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by six wickets in match 17 of IPL 2026.

Abhishek Sharma lights up the powerplay

Sunrisers Hyderabad were put in to bat and wasted no time. Abhishek Sharma smashed 74 off 28 balls, cracking five fours and eight sixes at a ferocious strike rate. He and Travis Head, who contributed 38 off 23 balls, took SRH to 105 for no loss after six overs, the highest powerplay score of the IPL 2026 season. Abhishek equalled the joint IPL record for the most sixes in a powerplay with seven, matching Sanath Jayasuriya, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow.

Shashank Singh broke the partnership with a double strike, removing both openers, and the SRH middle order could not maintain the same tempo. Heinrich Klaasen steadied things with 39, but Xavier Bartlett kept the final over to just five runs as SRH finished on 219 for six.

Three fifties seal the chase

If Abhishek thought his innings had set an unmatchable standard, Priyansh Arya had other ideas. The opener blasted 57 off 20 balls, reaching his fifty in just 16 deliveries and putting on 93 with Prabhsimran Singh for the first wicket. Prabhsimran carried on after Arya's departure, making 51 off 25 balls to keep the required rate comfortably within reach.

Shreyas Iyer then took control of the middle overs. The PBKS captain was unbeaten on 69 off 33 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes, and guided the chase home with composure that belied the scoreboard pressure. Punjab Kings reached 223 for four with seven balls remaining.

Punjab Kings stay unbeaten

The win extends Punjab Kings' perfect start to IPL 2026. They sit second in the standings behind Rajasthan Royals, who also remain unbeaten. For Sunrisers Hyderabad, this is their third defeat in four matches, and the bowling unit will need answers before the tournament moves deeper into April.
