Real Madrid and Manchester United in tug of war for Wharton as Palace hold firm on price

Crystal Palace have slapped a price tag north of 80 million pounds on Adam Wharton as Real Madrid and Manchester United both push to sign the 22-year-old midfielder this summer. Palace are under no pressure to sell with Wharton tied down until 2029, but neither suitor appears willing to back off.

The battle for Adam Wharton is shaping up to be one of the summer's defining transfer sagas. Real Madrid performed a sharp U-turn this week and confirmed their interest in the Crystal Palace midfielder, joining Manchester United in what is becoming an increasingly crowded race for one of the Premier League's most sought-after young players.

Palace are not budging

Crystal Palace have no intention of making this easy for anyone. Wharton signed a five-and-a-half-year contract in February 2024, meaning the club holds all the leverage with a deal that runs until the summer of 2029. Reports from multiple outlets this week have placed Palace's asking price somewhere between 80 million and 100 million euros, a figure that reflects both Wharton's long contract and how central he has become to the team.

For context, Palace paid Blackburn Rovers a fee of up to 22 million pounds for Wharton just over two years ago. That they can now name a price four or five times that amount tells you how quickly his stock has risen.

What United want from Wharton

Manchester United see Wharton as a long-term solution to a problem that is about to get very real. Casemiro is expected to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires in June, with Inter Miami among the clubs reportedly interested. That leaves a gap in central midfield that United need to fill with someone who can control the tempo and protect the back four for the next six or seven years.

United are believed to be preparing a bid in the 50 to 60 million pound range. Whether that is enough to even open negotiations with Palace seems doubtful given the asking price, but United have identified Wharton as a priority target and appear willing to push the numbers higher if needed.

Real Madrid's late entry

The more interesting development is Real Madrid's involvement. Earlier reports had suggested Madrid were not pursuing Wharton, but that stance changed this week. Madrid are said to be monitoring the situation closely, though they reportedly want Palace to lower their valuation before making a formal move.

Madrid's interest makes sense. Arda Guler has been excellent in a creative role this season, but the squad still needs reinforcement in deeper midfield positions. Wharton's ability to progress the ball through pressure and dictate the pace of a match would complement the attacking talent Madrid already have.

Wharton's form speaks for itself

Born on February 6, 2004, Wharton turned 22 earlier this year and is already one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League. He reads the game well, keeps possession under pressure, and has the kind of quiet authority in the centre of the pitch that coaches build teams around. Palace sit 14th in the table, but their results this season have owed a lot to Wharton's consistency.

The player himself is reportedly expecting a move to a Champions League club this summer. Whether that takes him to Madrid or Manchester will likely come down to who blinks first on the price.

Other movers and shakers

Elsewhere in the transfer rumour mill, Cole Palmer's future at Chelsea continues to generate noise. Reports on Saturday claimed the 23-year-old is "disillusioned" at Stamford Bridge and open to a move, with Manchester United and Bayern Munich among the clubs said to be watching. Chelsea have slapped a 150 million pound tag on Palmer and consider him untouchable, but the fact that exit talk keeps surfacing at all is a sign that something is not quite right.

Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford is also edging closer to a move to Newcastle, while Barcelona have reportedly offered Ferran Torres and Dani Olmo to Inter Milan as part of a swap deal for defender Alessandro Bastoni.
