Shaheen Shah Afridi won the toss and chose to bat on a surface that offered little for the bowlers early on. Fakhar Zaman set the tone at the top with 53 off 39 balls, an innings built almost entirely on boundaries. He hit 10 fours and did not clear the rope once, picking gaps through the off side and working anything on his pads through square leg.

Haseebullah Khan chipped in with an unbeaten 40 off 28 from the middle order, while Sikandar Raza smashed 24 off just 10 to give the innings late impetus. Shaheen himself provided the exclamation mark, launching two sixes in the final over to push the total to 199 for 6.

Kingsmen crumble on debut

Hyderabad Kingsmen, one of two new franchises added as the PSL expanded from six to eight teams this season, never got close. Their chase fell apart through a combination of poor shot selection and disciplined Lahore bowling, and they were bundled out for 130.

The Kingsmen are captained by Marnus Labuschagne and coached by Jason Gillespie, but the Australian influence could not prevent a chastening first outing. It was always going to be a steep learning curve for a side thrown together through the expansion draft, and the 69-run margin reflected the gulf between a settled outfit and one still finding its feet.

Empty stands tell a bigger story

The scoreboard was not the only talking point. The PSL 2026 is being played without spectators after the PCB confirmed matches would go ahead behind closed doors due to Pakistan's fuel shortage, caused by disruptions linked to the conflict in the Middle East. The opening ceremony was also scrapped.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said it would be wrong to have 30,000 fans travelling to stadiums daily when the government has asked citizens to restrict movement and work from home. The tournament has been scaled back from six venues to just Lahore and Karachi, and the board has promised ticket refunds and compensation for franchises.

Shaheen's Qalandars, three-time champions chasing a fourth title, will not mind the silence too much after a performance that showed they remain the team to beat.
