IPL 2026 captains meet BCCI in Mumbai as Impact Player rule survives another season

All ten IPL captains gathered at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Wednesday for the customary pre-season briefing ahead of the 19th edition of the tournament, which begins on March 28. The meeting confirmed that the Impact Player rule will remain in place until at least 2027 despite pushback from a majority of skippers.

Three days before the first ball of IPL 2026 is bowled, the ten men who will lead their franchises sat across from BCCI officials in Mumbai to hash out the playing conditions for this season. For the first time in the competition's history, every captain in that room was Indian.

Impact Player rule stays put

The biggest talking point was the Impact Player rule. Introduced in 2023, it allows teams to substitute one member of their starting XI at any point during a match. A majority of captains raised concerns about its tactical implications, with critics arguing it tilts the balance too far towards batting and stunts the development of all-rounders.

None of it mattered. The BCCI confirmed that the rule stays until at least 2027, with no review planned before then. Whatever the captains think, the board has made up its mind.

Ball changes, timers and conduct

The session also covered ball-change protocols. A proposal to allow a ball change after the 10th over of the first innings, mirroring the existing second-innings rule designed to counter dew, failed to gain traction. The current protocol stands.

Officials ran through the 60-second innings timer, concussion substitute protocols and the code of conduct. Captains were told they would be held accountable for maintaining the pace of play across the season.

Ten Indian captains, one room

The lineup told its own story. Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians), Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings), Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants), Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders), Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings), Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals) and Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals) all attended. Ishan Kishan stood in for Pat Cummins at Sunrisers Hyderabad, who is recovering from a back injury.

With Cummins sidelined and no other overseas captain in the picture, this is the first IPL season with an entirely homegrown captaincy group.

What comes next

The season opens on Saturday when defending champions RCB host Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Only the first 20 matches have been scheduled so far, with the remaining 64 fixtures to be announced after key state election dates are confirmed.
