O'Reilly scores twice as Manchester City beat Arsenal to win ninth League Cup

Nico O'Reilly struck twice in four second-half minutes to give Manchester City a 2-0 win over Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday. The 21-year-old's birthday weekend brace handed Pep Guardiola a record fifth League Cup triumph as manager.

Arsenal arrived at Wembley chasing a first League Cup since 1993. They left empty-handed, undone by a player most neutral fans could not have named at kick-off.

O'Reilly announces himself on the biggest stage

Nico O'Reilly, who turned 21 the day before the final, headed Manchester City in front around the 60th minute after a pinpoint cross from the right. Four minutes later he added a second, finishing coolly after a quick counter-attack to kill the contest.

The Wembley crowd had barely processed the first goal before the second arrived. O'Reilly has been at City since the age of eight and made his senior debut in 2024, but nothing in his career so far compared to this. A cup final brace, a winner's medal, and a place in club history.

Guardiola breaks the record

The win gave Guardiola his fifth League Cup title, more than any other manager in the competition's history. Brian Clough, Sir Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourinho all managed four. For City, it was their ninth League Cup overall, extending their own record.

Arsenal's route to the final had been impressive, knocking out Chelsea 4-2 on aggregate in the semi-finals. But Mikel Arteta's side could not find a way past a disciplined City defence on the day.

What it means for both sides

City remain nine points behind Arsenal in the Premier League, sitting second with 61 points from 30 matches. The League Cup does nothing to close that gap, but it gives Guardiola's squad something tangible from a season that has been defined by their chase of Arsenal at the top.

For Arsenal, the defeat stings but the bigger picture remains encouraging. Arteta's team lead the Premier League with 70 points from 31 matches and are still in the Champions League. A domestic cup exit hurts, though losing to two goals from a 21-year-old academy product will linger for a while.
