Manchester United are in advanced talks to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes this summer, according to reports from Reuters, with the deal valued at around 80 million euros (roughly 69 million pounds).

Casemiro’s exit opens the door

The 28-year-old Brazilian has been identified as the long-term replacement for Casemiro, whose departure from Old Trafford was confirmed in January 2026. The 34-year-old’s contract expires at the end of the current season and the club chose not to activate a one-year extension clause, despite a strong run of form under interim head coach Michael Carrick. Casemiro himself has reportedly recommended Guimaraes as his successor.

Guimaraes signed a five-year contract with Newcastle in October 2023, tying him to St James’ Park until 2028. That gives the Magpies a strong negotiating position, but their exit from the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona this month has shifted the picture. Without European football on the horizon for next season, Newcastle’s ability to hold onto their captain looks less certain.

Real Madrid lurking

United are not the only club circling. Real Madrid have held a long-standing interest in Guimaraes dating back to 2022. Reports suggest Real Madrid manager Álvaro Arbeloa has backed a move to the Bernabeu. Carlo Ancelotti, who now works with Guimaraes in the Brazilian national team setup, is also understood to be an admirer of the midfielder. If Madrid firm up their interest, it would complicate matters for Carrick’s rebuild at Old Trafford.

Carrick has overseen a sharp improvement since taking charge in January, collecting 22 points from a possible 27 and pushing United back into Champions League contention. Landing a midfielder of Guimaraes’ quality would be a statement of intent for whoever holds the manager’s chair next season, with the club still expected to make a permanent appointment in the summer.

What Guimaraes would bring

Guimaraes has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent central midfielders since joining Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022. He combines progressive passing with tenacious ball-winning, filling exactly the profile United need as Casemiro’s legs slow. At 28, he is entering his peak years, which explains why the reported fee sits firmly in the premium bracket.

Newcastle will resist where they can, but financial realities and the absence of Champions League football could force their hand. For United, getting this one over the line before Real Madrid do could define their summer.
