Michael Carrick's resurgence as interim manager continued on Sunday as Manchester United beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Old Trafford, a result that lifted United to third in the Premier League table on 54 points.

Casemiro header breaks the deadlock

A cagey first half ended goalless, though Ollie Watkins picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute as tempers frayed. The game opened up eight minutes after the restart when Casemiro rose to head home from a Bruno Fernandes corner in the 53rd minute, giving United a deserved lead.

Villa responded well. Ross Barkley equalised in the 64th minute with a composed finish after Lucas Digne's delivery picked him out, and for a spell Old Trafford looked anxious. That anxiety lasted seven minutes.

Fernandes rewrites the record books

Fernandes threaded a pass through to Matheus Cunha on 71 minutes, and the forward made no mistake to restore United's advantage. It was Fernandes' second assist of the afternoon, and the one that mattered most for the history books. His 16th league assist of the season took him past David Beckham's tally of 15 from the 1999-2000 campaign, a record that had stood for 26 years.

Substitute Benjamin Sesko put the result beyond doubt in the 81st minute, finishing clinically to make it 3-1. Villa brought on Douglas Luiz and Ian Maatsen soon after, but the game was done.

Carrick's revival rolls on

Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has won seven, drawn one and lost just once in nine league games. United sat sixth when he walked through the door. They are now third on 54 points, sixteen behind leaders Arsenal but right in the race for Champions League qualification ahead of fourth-placed Aston Villa on 51.

Fernandes still has eight games left to chase the all-time Premier League single-season assists record of 20, held jointly by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne. At this rate, breaking it feels like a genuine possibility.
